Spotlight: A Farmer’s Daughter

Not too long ago I spotlighted (spotlit?) the leatherwork of Ken Diamond. This time the spotlight falls on A Farmer’s Daughter aka the featherwork of Melanie Hull. I first came across Melanie’s work in the local paper and immediately wanted to see her work in person.

I met up with Melanie and we quickly found we had a lot in common, she is actually a graphic designer and only started making jewellery and accessories as a sort of side business. She started making feather accessories a couple of years ago and now they’re really in high demand.

All the feather pieces she creates are largely inspired by combs and hats that her grandmother wore back in the Ukraine.

I wanted to see more than just what she had at her place so we walked over to one of the shops carrying her line. Valley of the Dolls (4332 Main Street, Vancouver) is a great local shop run by the lovely, and very friendly, Avril Tait.

Love the vintage movie poster on the wall!

Avril graciously allowed me to mess up all of her nice little displays of Melanie’s pieces so I could photograph a bunch of them.

Love this color combination.

This one reminds me of a cardinal.

Love how the color pops on this one. Maybe my favourite. Electric blue!

I think Melanie said the peacock ones are the most popular. I can see why. And if that isn’t what she said, then I can see how someone could make that assumption.

Head on over to Melanie’s Etsy page to see more:

And if you’re in Vancouver, pop over to Valley of the Dolls and say whats up to Avril!

So we’ve covered some leatherwork, and some featherwork, it’s gonna be tough to find something else that rhymes. Weatherwork …? (haha sorry I had to fit that in)
