  • courtney

    these are great
    the fourth one interests me.

  • c

these make me miss los angeles horribly.

  • emily

the frequent uses of smoke steam is very intriguing and pleasing to look at

  • I <3 these. I miss LA.

  • There’s such a lovely mood about all of them.

  • Anybody know where the last photo is from? Are those goats?

    • they are goats yes, not sure the location

      • c

the city hires goats to clear away dry brush or grass! it’s cheaper and cleaner for sure. and that is most definitely just below the angel’s flight park, next to pershing square station.

  • KB

    love the b&w airplane image.

  • alexander katzeff

I’m curious, why is one of these images not Los Angeles? 2nd one from the top…that’s Santa Barbara. It reminds of “Drive” by Andrew Bush.

    • i dont think its a stretch to think that the photographer ,while based in LA, would take photos elsewhere!

  • lapetitefaon

thes make me want to travel to…Los Angeles?

  • Hugo

The swimming pool one is incredible, such strong colours.

  • alexander katzeff

@Jeffhamada – Understood. I assumed the series was titled “Los Angeles”.

  • Ari

    Phenomenal images. I love these.

  • Thanks all (and of course, Jeff!) for the look.

Experimental Artist Petros Vrellis Creates Detailed Portraits With A Single Thread

Born in Greece, with a background in Electrical Engineering as well as Art Science, artist Petros Vrellis has a passion for creating interactive installations that blend art and technology. His latest project is a mesmerizing re-imagining of traditional handicraft.

Using a 28″ aluminum-rimmed loom, Petros runs a single thread from one anchor peg to another to create just the right density and darkening at precise intersections. The end result is a detailed image that emerges from 3000 – 4000 continuous loops (or 1-2 kilometers of thread)!

While Petros is following a set pattern developed from a computer-generated algorithm, as you can see in the time-lapsed video above, the step-by-step process is all done by hand. We had the chance to speak with Petros about his experimental process and why hand-made work still has a place in the digital age. Check out the full interview below!
