Video of the Day: Jackie Chan and the Art of Editing an Action Comedy Film

jackiechan-actioncomedy

Filmmaker Tony Zhou returns with another brilliant video for “Every Frame A Painting”, his on-going series of video essays on all things film. In this episode Tony breaks down the genius of Jackie Chan and the art of making a good action comedy. Chan has terrific insights into the proper way to cut together action, and the video illustrates how many of today’s editors and directors are ruining films with their editing and framing choices.

This video is for anyone who has tried to watch a Transformers film and had no idea what happened during any of the action sequences. If you’re a filmmaker, of any kind, this is required viewing. Watch the video below.

This is amazing. I had an editing teacher that told us to always cut on the action. I’ll always remember how effective this is in the future.

    • yea it’s counter intuitive as an editor actually

  • Awesome. Exactly nails everything I hate in most modern action films.
