Booooooom Reader Submissions: February

Hello everyone, here is this month’s Reader Submissions post! Please share your work here if you’d like to be considered for a feature on Booooooom. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

One of the things that makes Booooooom unique is the encouraging comments people send back and forth on these monthly submission posts. If you’re going to share your work please take an extra second to leave a nice comment on someone else’s work!

Voting up work is like high-fiving that person, and it also helps us see what work you guys like! Remember, even if your work isn’t featured on the main site these posts can send some decent traffic to your portfolio! The link below the guidelines at the bottom will open up this full post, simply scroll down and use our commenting system to submit your work.

Submission guidelines:

 1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2017

Mural by Audrey Kawasaki during Pow! Wow! 2016

It’s my favourite time of year again! Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2017 arts festival is set to take over Honolulu February 11th-18th. The 2017 artist roster has been released (view the list here) and really I’m looking forward to meeting all the artists!

If you find yourself a cheap airline ticket make sure you get out there in time for the massive gallery show on February 12th, curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace. There are close to 100 artists showing work in it (full list here) and the show is always a highlight for me. Also, on February 15th I’ll be doing a talk with one of my favourite artists, Mr. Jago, so maybe come for that too!

If you can’t make it out to Hawaii, the entire festival will be captured by many photographers on Instagram @powwowworldwide, and I’ll be posting things to @booooooom.

Booooooom TV Guide: Best Animations of the Week

If you’re an animator looking for inspiration make sure you peep the animation section of Booooooom TV. We’re working hard to make it a collection of the best animated work on the Internet. Here’s a few recommendations:

1. A barrage of short animations by Max Litvinov (a personal fav)

2. Jurriaan & Merijn Hos’ spectacular work for Down The Rabbit Hole Festival

3. Manabu Himeda has lost his mind – this animation is CRAZY!

BONUS: Missed posting this one when I was away in Japan – “Johnny Bubble” by Alan Resnick is an absurd masterpiece.

GIRLSCHOOL x Society6

Deap Vally x Natalie Foss

Musician Anna Bulbrook (The Bulls, Airborne Toxic Event, and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) recently launched GIRLSCHOOL, a Los Angeles-based music festival and collective that celebrates female voices. A portion of proceeds from each event go to a girl-positive organization, and this year’s festival (Jan 27-29) will support Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls LA, a 501c3 social justice organization using loud music to nurture self-esteem and self-expression in young girls.

Society6 has joined forces with GIRLSCHOOL to pair up musicians and artists to create visuals inspired by the music, to be displayed at the event. See a few more of the collaborations below!

Artist Spotlight: Brendan Monroe

brendan-monroe-mammatus24

Our friend Brendan Monroe’s show “Mammatus” just opened at Curator’s Cube in Tokyo. We stopped by the space last week and it all looked fantastic — a nice mix of drawing, painting and sculpture (especially loved the ceramics). The shows up until the 29th so if you happen to be in Japan go go go. Have a look at more images below!
