I’ve been personally trying out some of their classes and I just blazed through this great class on designing a single letter: “One Drop Cap Letterform at a Time” by the amazing Jessica Hische (I’ll always refer to her as the one who did that fantastic Moonrise Kingdom type). She has so many useful tips in this, especially when she talks about properly using handlebars and plotting points in Illustrator.
From what I’ve seen so far these classes are a great way to brush up on something you may have learned a long time ago or a chance to learn something completely new. Full disclosure: Skillshare did not pay us to make this post, however if you sign up through this link it will support our site! Absolutely no pressure to do so – I still recommend their site as a worthwhile resource even if you don’t use our link!
You can watch a preview of Jessica Hische’s class below!
I’d like to see Jiro’s reaction to this video of Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada deconstructing a McDonalds Big Mac and rolling it up like sushi. If you’re taking notes at home he adds tomato, avocado, BBQ sauce, and spicy mayo.
Watch the video below (you want to resist watching but you can’t).
We have a very cool giveaway this week courtesy of Moleskine and Milk! It’s a gorgeous handcrafted custom photo album made of your choice of either black or ivory leather, and either Italian Tintoretto art paper or Mohawk proPhoto paper. We’re gonna hookup one of you with the 40-page version which retails for $795 as well as this leather backpack.
Giveaway ends in two weeks, we’ll pick a winner on November 27th. If you’d like to snag both of these beautiful items simply leave a comment below with your plans for the photo album, what are you going to put inside of it?
The Guardian has published an incredible story about a fisherman, Salvador Alvarenga, who encountered a storm and found himself 6,700 miles from home. He was lost at sea for 438 days. It sounds impossible but Alvarenga and his inexperienced companion, 22-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba, basically survived by learning to catch fish with bare hands and drinking their own urine while waiting for fresh rain water.
A few weeks ago we hid 15 of these green tokens (drawn by artist Luke Ramsey) around our site. We were surprised how many of you were able to find them all!
Congratulations to the following 4 people who were the fastest to find them all: Brianna Pereira, Tomás Gutiérrez Cillero, Liam Fogerty, and Corbin Foreman. You’ve each won an original drawing by Luke Ramsey and a bag courtesy of our friends at Herschel Supply. Also congrats, Carl Bahr, you found the rare red token so you also get a bag!

If you missed it before, this is a little video of Luke drawing all the little characters. If you wanna support Luke we’re selling the rest of his original drawings (not prints) in our shop for the next few days! Check ’em out here: shop.booooooom.com
Minnesota-based photographer Alec Soth may be a highly accomplished artist in his own right but now he’s focusing his attention on the next generation. For Soth the most important thing is getting young people out of traditional classrooms and actually looking at things out in the world. Watch the video below for more information on how you can support Soth’s “art school on wheels”!

Earlier this year I was invited out to a festival called IAM in Barcelona, and I spoke about my motivations for running this website. They recently uploaded my entire talk to Vimeo. This message in the image above is what I wanted to leave people with. For me, life is not about eliminating fear it’s about using it! I’m pretty much at a point now where I have no real desire to do anything if I’m not at least a little bit afraid to do it.
If you’ve followed Booooooom for a couple years everything in this video may be old news but if you’re new here and have no idea what Booooooom is or who I am (see how I brought it back to IAM) then feel free to watch the video of my talk below.
