Keys n Krates

Some music for your weekend! Keys N Krates, if you don’t already know you better get familiar! Picture The Roots, but Black Thought has been replaced by an ITF world champion DJ. Here they are absolutely killing Toronto earlier this year.

Jr Flo (the krates) and Matisse (the keys) are rockin parties the way they were meant to be rocked! Remixes with live drums, bass, and keys! It doesn’t get any better than this. They blew several thousand minds at the Livestock BBQ here in Vancouver in September.

Priscilla Ahn

Le Blogotheque recently put up some great videos of Priscilla Ahn and I instantly became her biggest (and newest, and best-looking) fan. Listening to her voice is like sipping hot chocolate by the campfire. If you like this song, there’s a couple more after the jump.

Beastie Boys Live – PART 2

Not exactly hot on the heels of Beastie Boys Live – PART 1, but here is the next installment nonetheless. If you haven’t already grabbed Live in Australia ’99 and the Demo version of Paul’s Boutique do that first. Next up is Live in London – Wembley Stadium, also from 1999. Sound quality is the name of the game here so this is another one that is likely direct from soundboard or possibly from the feed that went out to radio.

Once again these photos were taken by Maya Hayuk, a fantastic artist whose work I am a huge fan of.

Radiohead – Reckoner Diplo Remix

Diplo remixed Reckoner, you can too. After the smashing success of all the fan remixes of Nude, Radiohead has made all the instrumental elements of Reckoner available for download. To kick things off Radiohead got Diplo (genius behind M.I.A’s album, Arular) to officially remix the track.

If you’ve been to Radiohead Remix then you already know the drill – make a remix, upload, vote. Listen to Diplo’s handiwork here: Reckoner (DIPLO remix)

Paul’s Boutique Demos!

“People ask me when my tape is comin’ out yall well here it is yall and its clout!” I was gonna continue the Beastie Boys Live series and then I decided to switch things up this week and share some demo songs with you! Specifically demos from Paul’s Boutique! 12 tracks including Full Clout which is an early version of Shake Your Rump.

This album is widely regarded as Beastie Boys best work to date, and one of the greatest albums of all time. I agree with half of that statement. It is one of the greatest albums of all time, but I don’t feel like it can be considered their best work. They are simply rapping over other people’s work (in this case brilliant production from the Dust Brothers) so in that sense it’s no different than License to Ill. To me, their next three albums (Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty) have to be their best work as they most accurately describe their talent as actual musicians. I personally like Ill Communication the best, feel free to disagree (just know that you are wrong).

Let’s just get to the music shall we? You probably skipped that entire paragraph anyways…

Beastie Boys Live – PART 1

Back when I was blogging on Hypebeast I used to post live Beastie Boys concerts in mp3 every now and then. Since then I have recieved many requests from people to start doing so again. Today is your lucky day. First up is the Sydney Australia show from 1999. This bootleg is direct from soundboard I believe so the sound quality is A+.

Better be quick to grab this while it’s up and stay tuned for more, I have about 5 data discs full of concerts. The photo is courtesy of Maya Hayuk and has nothing to do with the concert but I love her work and this series of photos especially. Click “more” for the link.

No Luck Club

Last week I caught up with my friend Vince and his friend Trevor at a nice little Korean place downtown. Trevor (with the hat) and his brother Matt started an instrumental hip hop group called No Luck Club in 2000, and were quickly signed to Dan the Automator’s 75Ark Records.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances (the same circumstances that are preventing us from hearing the finished sequel to the Deltron 3030 album) 75Ark suddenly imploded just as the guys were about to relase their album. Luckily Ill Boogie Records stepped in and No Luck Club’s highly acclaimed “Happiness” album finally saw the light of day in 2003.

Their live show quickly attracted a large following and they were being compared to the likes of Dj Shadow and Coldcut, not to mention sharing the bill with the likes of Jurassic 5, and Kid Koala. Vancouver DMC champ Pluskratch joined the group and they released their followup to “Happiness”, called “Prosperity”.

Trevor didn’t ask me to post about him but this is what I do! Here’s one of my favourite tracks from “Prosperity”! If you like Ozomatli (who doesn’t?), you’ll love this!
