Herschel Supply and Booooooom: “Drawing On The Past”

herschelsupply-booooooom

If you follow @Booooooom on Instagram you may have already seen hints about this! I’m excited to announce that my friends at Herschel Supply and I have made a special bag together and we are releasing it as part of an art project called “Drawing On The Past”.

After years of people asking if there’s anything they can buy to show support for the site, this is it! This is the first real Booooooom product (and not the last). It’s special to me for many reasons; one being that Andrea Wan, one of my all-time favourite artists, drew the pattern for the inside of the bag. Watch the video below before I give it all away!

THE BAGS

There are only 75 bags for sale, and they will go live July 7th at 9am PST on Herschel’s website, bookmark this link: here.

As a little reward for reading all this text, I’ll tell you that if you join the Booooooom Secret Email Club you will get a heads up for purchasing the bags earlier than that.

Extra incentive to take part in the project: We’ll be hooking up some people with Herschel products and three (3) lucky people, whose submissions we especially like, will win the Herschel Supply and Booooooom bag.

THE PROJECT

I want you to draw a person, place, or thing, that’s had a positive impact on your life, and write a few sentences about it. I’ll be showcasing these drawings on Booooooom, and sharing your stories. The project will end with an art show here in Vancouver, where we will show selected work from the project  (I’d like to show as much as we can possibly fit in the space).

I really want to encourage those of you who don’t normally draw or make art to be a part of this project. The template you download will have space to draw and to write, and both are important. Drawing has two meanings, and this project is as much about moving a pen on a page, as it is about remembering a moment.

THE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Download THIS TEMPLATE, print it off on any 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

2. Draw your picture, write a few sentences below it.

3. Scan the entire page and email it to: projects@booooooom.com with the subject “DRAWING ON THE PAST”. Deadline: August 4th, 2014.

4. To be eligible to be for the gallery show, you must physically mail in your original drawing. We must receive all entries by August 4th, 2014, leave enough time for shipping. Due to the number of potential submissions, drawings will not be returned. Mail your drawings to:

Booooooom
Suite 357 – 2416 Main St.
Vancouver, BC, V5T3E2

5. Share your work on Instagram and use the hashtag #drawingonthepast

THE TERMS

By submitting artwork, each entrant gives Booooooom and Herschel Supply a non-exclusive, perpetual, transferrable, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid-up license to use, and display the artwork online, offline, or in print, including but not limited to, Booooooom.com, HerschelSupply.com, and the final gallery show. Booooooom and Herschel Supply also reserve the right to not display works submitted to this project for any reason. None of the artwork submitted will be made for sale.

“Love From Hawaii” Free Encouragement Project (Gallery of Postcard Senders)

00001

Our “Love From Hawaii” Encouragement Project is in full swing. As I described in the previous post I am having people here in Hawaii write encouraging postcards to Booooooom readers who leave comments on this post.

I’ll be adding portraits of all the postcard senders here. My cell phone battery is constantly dying so I’ll get them up as quickly as humanly possible – tons on the way.

You may recognize a few faces in the gallery below!

“Love From Hawaii” Free Encouragement Project

lovefromhawaii-1

If you’ve been following along on Instagram you already know that I’m in Honolulu right now for this year’s Pow! Wow! Hawaii event. The last two years I painted murals, but this year I wanted my contribution to be a little different.

This year I want to include people who can’t physically come to Hawaii so I’m launching a free encouragement project. It’s really simple, if you’re in need of some encouragement ask for it in the comments below.

Tell me why you need the encouragement, be specific, and include your mailing address. I’ll be walking around Hawaii this week meeting people and asking them to write some words of encouragement on postcards, in response to the comments on this post.

The first 100 messages will be written on a set of beautiful postcards given to me by my friend James Jean. If you’re interested the set will be released by Chronicle Books on February 25th. At the end of the week I will mail out all the postcards.

I’m not sure how many people will actually ask for free encouragement but if I get through the first 100 I’ll buy more postcards and continue on. So who wants some free encouragement?

Booooooom Project: #FriendlyGangSigns

friendlygangsigns-500

Today we launch a new Booooooom project #FriendlyGangSigns.

Here are the instructions:

1. Use your hands to make letters and take photos of them.

2. Arrange the photos to spell out a message. It could be something funny, your New Year’s resolution, life motto, a love letter, anything. You can certainly make something more creative than the two images here (I spent a grand total of 10 minutes making them).

3. Share your magnificent creation on Instagram, and be sure to hashtag #FriendlyGangSigns and tag @Booooooom.

Please submit square format photos. There’s a free app called framemagic that allows you to arrange a 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, even a 5×5 square. Another option is to just screenshot your camera roll.

You can use filters, but don’t go overboard.

The most creative, funny, thought-provoking, submissions will be shared on Booooooom. Two winners will be picked on January 20th and each will snag the entire collection of tees I designed for Aritzia.

First-Ever Booooooom Book!

We're making a book!

Hello friends!

Allow me to be the first to tell you that I am beginning work on the first-ever Booooooom book! The best part of it is that it’s gonna be published by one of my favourite publishers, Chronicle Books!

Chronicle Books has approached me to turn our Remake Project into a book. If you missed it, this was the project where we had everyone remaking masterworks of art as photographs.

The project was shared by hundreds of blogs and major news outlets including Huffington Post, Yahoo News, AOL, MSNBC, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The MOMA, The Guardian (two different articles), Reader’s Digest, you get the idea. It was HUGE.

So what I want to do is turn all of your amazing submissions into an incredible art book. It is not gonna be cheap to produce this thing, doing this the right way means getting the image rights to reproduce all the classic works. Hopefully we will be able to secure the rights to 50 classic works.

As a contributor to this book you won’t be paid but you will receive two copies of the finished book. At the end of the day, the point of the book is for more people to see the amazing things you created. I also think it will just be cool to have this book as a piece of history – art history – and also Booooooom history.

If you would like to be considered for the book I would love it if you submitted! If you already made work that was featured in our gallery please re-submit it. If you are just hearing about this project for the first time and want to make something, you have until the end of January to submit work.

What I need from you is a signed release saying that we have permission to print your Remake in the book, as well as the highest resolution image that you have of your work.

1. Download the release form: here

2. Email the form and high resolution artwork with the subject line “REMAKE SUBMISSION” to: projects@booooooom.com.

Please include the following details:

YOUR NAME:

THE NAME OF ORIGINAL ARTIST:

TITLE OF ORIGINAL ARTWORK:

*In order to be published in the book the artwork needs to be as high resolution as possible. If the work is too big to email, please use a service such as WeTransfer.

We will notify you if your work has been selected for the book! Thank you all for being a part of this, I’m really excited to take it further than I’ve ever taken any of the projects.

Stoked for this!

Homemade Instrument / Winners

Booooooom & MTV / made of imagination

As our “Made of Imagination” project with MTV and Sony Xperia comes to a close I just want to make sure I say thank you to every single one of you for getting involved!

It’s kinda silly to only pick two winners but that’s how many prize packs I get to give away. I wanted to reward entrants who created something specifically for this project instead of submitting something they’d previously made, and both of these submissions went above and beyond with wonderful performance videos.

Congratulations to Joel Zuercher (Los Angeles, California) and Cristian Martínez (Buenos Aires, Argentina), you have both won Sony Xperia phones as well as some Booooooom goodies!

See both submissions below:

Joel Zuercher’s submission is a box with spindles and a hand crank and two guitar wires strung across the front.

Cristian Martínez’s submission is a modified toy affixed with metal sponges, car antennas, and crocodiles clips. He is accompanied by his friend Isis Abigail on an oscillator, using herself and a plant as variable resistor. I love how Isis really goes off near the end.

I gotta acknowledge Simone Shin’s sewn turntables, Cara Stewart’s broom phonograph, and of course the fast food performance by Jessica and Aurélien! These were also standouts! If you haven’t done so already, take a look at all the instruments:

Submissions PART I + Submissions PART II

Thanks for making this such a fun project you guys! Any Booooooom goodies I promised people will be sent next week!
