First-Ever Booooooom Book!

We're making a book!

Hello friends!

Allow me to be the first to tell you that I am beginning work on the first-ever Booooooom book! The best part of it is that it’s gonna be published by one of my favourite publishers, Chronicle Books!

Chronicle Books has approached me to turn our Remake Project into a book. If you missed it, this was the project where we had everyone remaking masterworks of art as photographs.

The project was shared by hundreds of blogs and major news outlets including Huffington Post, Yahoo News, AOL, MSNBC, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The MOMA, The Guardian (two different articles), Reader’s Digest, you get the idea. It was HUGE.

So what I want to do is turn all of your amazing submissions into an incredible art book. It is not gonna be cheap to produce this thing, doing this the right way means getting the image rights to reproduce all the classic works. Hopefully we will be able to secure the rights to 50 classic works.

As a contributor to this book you won’t be paid but you will receive two copies of the finished book. At the end of the day, the point of the book is for more people to see the amazing things you created. I also think it will just be cool to have this book as a piece of history – art history – and also Booooooom history.

If you would like to be considered for the book I would love it if you submitted! If you already made work that was featured in our gallery please re-submit it. If you are just hearing about this project for the first time and want to make something, you have until the end of January to submit work.

What I need from you is a signed release saying that we have permission to print your Remake in the book, as well as the highest resolution image that you have of your work.

1. Download the release form: here

2. Email the form and high resolution artwork with the subject line “REMAKE SUBMISSION” to: projects@booooooom.com.

Please include the following details:

YOUR NAME:

THE NAME OF ORIGINAL ARTIST:

TITLE OF ORIGINAL ARTWORK:

*In order to be published in the book the artwork needs to be as high resolution as possible. If the work is too big to email, please use a service such as WeTransfer.

We will notify you if your work has been selected for the book! Thank you all for being a part of this, I’m really excited to take it further than I’ve ever taken any of the projects.

Stoked for this!

Homemade Instrument / Winners

Booooooom & MTV / made of imagination

As our “Made of Imagination” project with MTV and Sony Xperia comes to a close I just want to make sure I say thank you to every single one of you for getting involved!

It’s kinda silly to only pick two winners but that’s how many prize packs I get to give away. I wanted to reward entrants who created something specifically for this project instead of submitting something they’d previously made, and both of these submissions went above and beyond with wonderful performance videos.

Congratulations to Joel Zuercher (Los Angeles, California) and Cristian Martínez (Buenos Aires, Argentina), you have both won Sony Xperia phones as well as some Booooooom goodies!

See both submissions below:

Joel Zuercher’s submission is a box with spindles and a hand crank and two guitar wires strung across the front.

Cristian Martínez’s submission is a modified toy affixed with metal sponges, car antennas, and crocodiles clips. He is accompanied by his friend Isis Abigail on an oscillator, using herself and a plant as variable resistor. I love how Isis really goes off near the end.

I gotta acknowledge Simone Shin’s sewn turntables, Cara Stewart’s broom phonograph, and of course the fast food performance by Jessica and Aurélien! These were also standouts! If you haven’t done so already, take a look at all the instruments:

Submissions PART I + Submissions PART II

Thanks for making this such a fun project you guys! Any Booooooom goodies I promised people will be sent next week!

Hey Ocean / Made of Imagination

Hey Ocean / Made of Imagination

This is the fourth video we produced for MTV and Sony Xperia, and it features a band from right here in Vancouver, Hey Ocean.

We paired up the band up with percussive quartet TorQ. Together they completely reinvent Hey Ocean’s song “I am a Heart”. This is the sort of performance I envisioned when I originally pitched the project, love the energy here!

Also want to mention that we’ve reached the deadline for submission to our homemade instruments projects. A bunch more came in right at the buzzer so I’ll have the rest of them up next week.

You can see the full gallery of submissions here.

Little Scream / Made of Imagination

Little Scream / Made of Imagination

This is the third video we produced for MTV and Sony Xperia, and it features Little Scream! Nada and I are huuuge fans of hers so this really was a dream come true to have her be a part of this project.

In keeping with the unconventional instruments theme, we paired up Little Scream with sound designers Lo and Joseph and circuit benders from Toronto’s InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Center! Together they completely reinvented her song “Canons”. Albert Huh did a superb job capturing this performance. He’s been filming and editing all the videos in this series, and deserves a massive shout out!

Hopefully this video pumps you up to spend the weekend building your own instruments! You still have a week or so to get your submissions in, and remember we’re giving away Sony Xperia phones and Booooooom goodies as prizes!

If you wanna get involved jump over here.

Homemade instruments by Cara Stewart

Homemade instruments by Cara Stewart

A fantastic submission to our “Made of Imagination” project courtesy of Cara Stewart, Austin, Texas. She created 3 really unique instruments! This first one is called “Phonograph” and she built it using a broom head, log, contact mics, amplifyer, speaker, and wooden table.

“Contact mics inside the broom head amplify the sounds of the bristles playing over the log. The bristles act like a needle on a record player, or keys on a music box. The song is determined by the density of texture on the surface of the rotating log.”

See her other instruments below!
