Blogging 101

This weekend my friend Terri (The Conveyor Belt) and I were asked to speak on the topic of blogging, at the University of British Columbia! It was actually pretty fun to share the little bit I’ve learned so far, running this site. The best part is we were paid in my second favourite currency: Beer (second only to diamonds).

After I spoke, someone stood up and said “Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.” I thought that was a little rude, maybe that’s just me.

That was epic.

My friend and I have joked for a long time now that the comments on youtube videos are way entertaining than the videos themselves. The website thatwasepic.com takes this concept one step further.

Facebook group!

I have finally started a Facebook Group! I originally started a Fan Page but Mark Zuckerman (aka the world’s youngest billionaire) really didn’t make the Fan Pages easy to promote so the Group will replace the old Fan Page. If you’re looking for a quick way to promote your own work or share interesting links, join the group and post to your heart’s content.

$10 Million!

To celebrate Google’s 10th birthday a couple weeks ago they launched Project 10100 (pronounced “Project 10 to the 100th”). Anyone with a world-changing idea is invited to submit it! This is based on the fact that so many of us have access to tools that could help people, and the fact that there is a staggering number of people that need that help. Google has committed $10 million to funding up to five of the best ideas! Deadline is October 20th 2008.

Tequila till sunrise!

Another successful birthday! I had to figure out a way to outdo last year’s Sushi, Sunglasses & Sake party so I booked the whole lower floor of La Casita (Mexican restaurant) for about 40 of my pals and we enjoyed a night of Tequila & Pictionary! The winning team was entitled to as many churros (Mexican donuts) as they could eat. I secretly utilized my amazing mathematical powers to make sure the game was a draw so everyone would win (ie – one team was down 10,000 pts so naturally the last round was worth 10,000 pts).

Here I am eating a churro after “enjoying” about 50,000 shots of Tequila. In case you are wondering what my t-shirt says, it says robszol@hotmail.com. It was one of my many fabulous gifts, and more importantly, it is my friend Rob’s actual email address – the same email address we always shout out in the movie theatre when it all goes quiet (among other, less appropriate, things).

Today’s my birthday!

Hooray for October 3rd! Last year I went all out and had a Sushi, Sunglasses & Sake birthday at a big Japanese restaurant with about 20 friends. This year it’s Mexican – I’ll let you know how it goes. (I’m celebrating tonight so if the site hasn’t been updated on Monday assume it went well.)

I am taking the rest of the day off and dedicating this PBF comic to myself:

Have a great weekend everyone!

Mystery Lake

My friend Scoot and I went for a little hike and a swim on Sunday morning. I like to keep my spots secret but this one really is called Mystery Lake. You can’t really swim in a lake in late-September out here too often, but summer has stuck around a bit.
