Phonographantasmascope!

Jim Le Fevre is a genius. This is incredible!!! A little tweak to the shutter speed on his camera and Le Fevre’s turntable transforms into a perfect Zoetrope (invention which uses the persistence of motion principle to create the illusion of motion). Enjoy.

Flying Pizza Kitty!

Imagine a daily comic strip and a video game had a baby. I would name that baby Flying Pizza Kitty. Yet another genius creation by Ben. Love the movie references! Maybe animated gifs will make a comeback? If the images are a tiny bit blurry it’s because I blew them up to 500 wide, sorry but I gotta keep this place looking tidy. No shoes on the carpet!

The film Disney jacked for Aladdin.

The Thief and the Cobbler is quite possibly the best animated film ever made and most people still haven’t ever seen it – unless you went to school for animation, in which case you have a burned copy of this on your desk somewhere. The Thief and the Cobbler holds the record for the longest film production EVER at 31 years. Canadian animator Richard Williams (animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit) spent 26 years of his life trying to get his film completed only to have another company assume control of it and “finish” it without him. You can read the full story here.

Last year this cut of the film surfaced on the net. A fan, Garrett Gilchrist, actually cut this together using footage from the various versions of the film that had been released, as well as clips from an original uncut workprint. The result is a version of the film closest to Williams’ original. This is only Part 1 – you can view the entire film on youtube (if you follow this link the parts will automatically play one right after another).

Philip Glass for Sesame Street

More proof that Sesame Street (the original series) was the greatest show EVER. In 1979, famed-composer Philip Glass wrote a series of pieces for the show called “Geometry of Circles”. Here are four of the pieces compiled into one video.

VIDEO REMOVED BY YOUTUBE.

Kids these days aren’t getting the visual education they need! So many of today’s designers were being taught design principles at an early age by shows like Sesame Street.

PIKAPIKA!

People who have been reading this site for awhile know that I am obsessed with photography and specifically light drawing. The Japanese collective known as PIKAPIKA take it one step further and animate it all! Several companies in the past year (HP, etc) have used this in advertising but these guys really pioneered it. I almost want to put a warning here not to view too much of their work because you won’t even feel like getting out of bed in the tomorrow; they are that good.

More videos after the jump!
