Book Giveaway: Chromaphilia by Stella Paul

Phaidon is releasing a new book all about colour and art. Written by author and art historian Stella Paul, Chromaphilia invites readers to consider the many ways that colour has been theorized and utilized to express meaning and emotion throughout different time-periods and cultures.

Each chapter of the book covers a specific colour (Red, Blue, Purple, Gold, Yellow, Green, White, Grey and Black), and offers insight, artwork and anecdotes you probably didn’t know. Like how Yves Klein’s obsession with a particular shade of blue led him to develop his own customized (and patented) paint. Or how many crushed bugs it used to take to make the coveted red dye used for royal garments. (The answer is 70,000!)

Check out more images from Chromaphilia below or grab yourself a copy when it’s released on March 13th. We also have one to give away! To snag the book, simply post a link to any Booooooom article in the comment section below and write 1 sentence about the artist’s use of colour.

The winner will be selected in two weeks!

Booooooom Reader Submissions: November

november-600

For those of you who are new around here, this is the way to submit your work to be considered for a post on Booooooom.

Thank you to everyone for up-voting work and leaving positive comments on these posts! It really does pump people up, and ultimately helps me see what work you like. These monthly posts get a lot of traffic so even if your work is ultimately not a fit for Booooooom it still gets seen, and can send lots of eyeballs to your own websites.

Please share your work here this month. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

Submission guidelines:

1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

Photographer Benedict Redgrove Given Unprecedented Access to NASA Technology

wired6

Photographer Benedict Redgrove has been granted unprecedented access to document past and present NASA technology, a sneak peek of which can be seen in the new issue of WIRED UK.

Six years in the making, Redgrove captures everything from the space shuttle Atlantis and Vehicle Assembly Building, to the new Orion Crew Module, robot Valkyrie R5 and Boeing’s Starliner capsule. In fact the project is still ongoing, as it’s meant to culminate with the launch of the new SLS rocket in 2018.

Check out more images from “Past and Present Dreams of the Future” below.

Sneak Peek of Timothy Saccenti and Sam Rolfes’ New Book

saccenti9

saccenti6
Visionary director and photographer Timothy Saccenti has a beautiful print project coming out! Made in collaboration with 3D illustrator Sam Rolfes and heavily inspired by model/actor Sui Nakashima (who Saccenti met on a project for Depeche Mode’s last album), SUI: A Journey in Self-Realization explores identity formation and transformation through a series of computer-generated manipulations.

The cinematic feel of the project is testament to Saccenti and Rolfes process, shooting thousands of frames in studio with Rolfes live scanning and manipulating on set/in real time. SUI consists of 35 unbound images that allow the reader to go through them in whatever way they choose. It also comes packaged in a reflective polychrome box encased in a vellum sheet, a deliberate decision on the part of CYMK Books to enhance the unique, material aspect of the project. Check out more images of SUI below!
