Magic Hour Photo Club: Challenge #1 – Can You Find these 9 Photos on Our Site?

Magic Hour Photo Club

We’re launching a little club for those of you who enjoy photography, called the Magic Hour Photo Club! We have lots of fun things planned and we’ve made some hats to celebrate! Some will be for sale, and some will be awarded to people just for taking part in various photo challenges.

We aren’t officially starting the challenges quite yet but we have a mini-challenge here, and the first person to complete it gets sent a hat, a roll of film, and a sticker pack.

Below are cropped sections of 9 photos from 9 different photography posts on our site (see full size here). The first person to send an email to xxxxxxxxxxx with links to the 9 photography posts that contain these images gets all the goods. If you find all 9 but aren’t the first one to do it, we’ll still send you some little goodies (as supplies last). You’ll find the images on photography posts between today and January 1st 2016.

***This challenge is now over!***

Congratulations to Edmond Ng for finding all the images the fastest! You’re the first person to get one these hats! Stay tuned there will be more challenges on the way!

Starting tomorrow we’ll update this post with larger and larger crops of each photo as the hunt goes on. Good luck and stay tuned for the official launch of Magic Hour Photo Club!

Update 4pm: Here’s a better look at all 9 images below!

Also found a box of Kodak Portra film that was kept on ice (expired now) but will definitely be sending out rolls of that and other film along with sticker packs to people who find them all!

Update: Feb 9th – these might be the final hints!

Booooooom Reader Submissions: February

Hello everyone, here is this month’s Reader Submissions post! Please share your work here if you’d like to be considered for a feature on Booooooom. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

One of the things that makes Booooooom unique is the encouraging comments people send back and forth on these monthly submission posts. If you’re going to share your work please take an extra second to leave a nice comment on someone else’s work!

Voting up work is like high-fiving that person, and it also helps us see what work you guys like! Remember, even if your work isn’t featured on the main site these posts can send some decent traffic to your portfolio! The link below the guidelines at the bottom will open up this full post, simply scroll down and use our commenting system to submit your work.

Submission guidelines:

 1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

Booooooom TV Guide: Best Animations of the Week

If you’re an animator looking for inspiration make sure you peep the animation section of Booooooom TV. We’re working hard to make it a collection of the best animated work on the Internet. Here’s a few recommendations:

1. A barrage of short animations by Max Litvinov (a personal fav)

2. Jurriaan & Merijn Hos’ spectacular work for Down The Rabbit Hole Festival

3. Manabu Himeda has lost his mind – this animation is CRAZY!

BONUS: Missed posting this one when I was away in Japan – “Johnny Bubble” by Alan Resnick is an absurd masterpiece.

Booooooom TV Guide: Best Animations of the Week

benjy-brooke

If you haven’t been keeping up, this week there’s lot of new animation work on our video platform, Booooooom TV. We pick the best of the web and throw in some of our own video productions in there too. Hopefully you’ll see a bunch of stuff here that you won’t find anywhere else.

I recommend watching:

1) Benjy Brooke’s terrific short “Power Hungry” (wish it was longer).

2) A film about a record-breaking flight created using an old typewriter.

3) Animation for Sneaks “Tough Luck” – love the drawing style!

Constructive Criticism: Share Your Work

constructivecriticism-1

After all the responses last time, thought it’d be nice to do this again! Every week I get lots of emails asking for feedback on work and it’s pretty overwhelming and impossible to get through them all. The Monthly Reader Submissions posts exist for this very reason (so if you want to submit work please continue to share your work through these posts).

I wanted to try out a slightly different post here, one dedicated to providing people with some constructive criticism and feedback on the things they’re making. If you’re brave enough to share an image and link of your work below I will try to provide you with some feedback but also, and more importantly (because there’s only one of me), I’d like to invite other readers to give some polite, helpful, insightful comments to those submitting as well! It’s really hard to step outside yourself and see your own work with fresh eyes, and having a bunch of different sets of eyes provide feedback may help you improve.

Ideally the feedback is honest and direct (but not mean), and people in this community can actually spur each other onto to create stronger work. I realise this is a delicate balance to strike especially on the Internet so we’ll see how it goes.

To submit work or provide feedback open up the full post (either by clicking on the post title, the image above or the link at the bottom) and scroll down to the comments section. Please read the guidelines below!

Guidelines:

1. If you share your own work here, please also leave some feedback for others that have posted work. It helps the community!

2. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

3. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough. This is not about curation, it’s the way our commenting system is setup.

4. If you are providing feedback for someone please remember: Constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one. The purpose of constructive criticism is to improve the outcome. (via)

Film Premiere: “The Hold Downs” by Ian Durkin

flexfit-theholddowns-iandurkin

Today we’re excited to officially release a surf film we produced for our friends at Flexfit. The film is part of an on-going series where we give filmmakers the chance to make a film for fun! For this one, we teamed up with director Ian Durkin.

An ode to the party wave, “The Hold Downs” follows a small town surf gang as they cruise their home turf—surveying the scene, holding court at the local break and hot-dogging for any and all onlookers at the beach.

The film features the talents of Trevor Gordon, Travers Adler, Tosh Clements and Spencer Gordon. You can watch it below but you’ll probably wanna watch it nice and big over on Booooooom TV.

Oh, and a little extra something! If you wanna snag one of the special (very rare) hats we made for the film, simply share the film on Twitter and mention us @Booooooom or share it on Facebook and leave a comment below with a link to your post. We’ll hook up three of you with a hat and throw in some sticker packs to some others as well.

Booooooom TV Guide

booooooom-tv

Lots of new content going up daily on our video platform, Booooooom TV. All film and video content will be published there so you should bookmark it if you haven’t already.

I recommend watching:

1) This clip of a producer you probably never heard of called Jblack.

2) This short film on the unknown art of foley.

3) The final episode of the greatest internet series ever made.
