Exclusive Deal for Booooooom Readers: 3 Months of Skillshare Premium Classes

skillshare x booooooom
skillshare x booooooom
skillshare x booooooom

Heads up for any illustrators and designers out there! Skillshare is currently offering a special deal for Booooooom readers! 3 months of Skillshare Premium for $1. This gives you access to over 2,500 premium classes, with excellent step by step video tutorials, taught by many artists we’ve featured on Booooooom.

Now I haven’t tried out all 2,500+ classes but I have been slowly making my way through a bunch of them to find some worth recommending to you guys. The stills above are from Jessica Hische’s Drop Cap Letterform class, one of the 8 classes I curated for our special Booooooom page. Other classes I’d recommend are Jon Burgerman’s doodling class, Julia Rothman’s class on how to create repeating patterns, and Meg Lewis’ Basics of Photoshop.

Full disclosure, if you sign up through our special landing page it does support us! No pressure whatsoever, though! Even if you don’t wanna use our link, their site is still worth checking out! Platforms like these are going to put a lot of schools out of business.

You can watch previews of the classes by Jon Burgerman, Julia Rothman, and Jessica Hische below!

Booooooom Reader Submissions: December

december-600

Thanks to every single one of you who submitted work to the November Reader Submissions post, it’s really cool to see all the talent in this community!

For those of you who are new, these posts are the best way to submit your work to be considered for a post on Booooooom. Up-voting work you like and leaving the positive comments to each other helps me see what work you like really pumps people up. I encourage you to do both! These posts get a lot of traffic so even if your work is not a fit for Booooooom it still gets seen by many (and definitely sends traffic to your own websites).

Please share your work here this month by leaving a comment below. The commenting system allows images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

Submission guidelines:

1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

Free Learning of the Day: Skillshare Classes

skillshare-01

This is for all you aspiring photographers, illustrators, and type designers out there! We’ve teamed up with Skillshare to offer you 1 month of unlimited access to all their creative classes, for $0. Free. You can sign up here for a premium account: Booooooom + Skillshare 30-day extended trial.

I’ve been personally trying out some of their classes and I just blazed through this great class on designing a single letter: “One Drop Cap Letterform at a Time” by the amazing Jessica Hische (I’ll always refer to her as the one who did that fantastic Moonrise Kingdom type). She has so many useful tips in this, especially when she talks about properly using handlebars and plotting points in Illustrator.

From what I’ve seen so far these classes are a great way to brush up on something you may have learned a long time ago or a chance to learn something completely new. Full disclosure: Skillshare did not pay us to make this post, however if you sign up through this link it will support our site! Absolutely no pressure to do so – I still recommend their site as a worthwhile resource even if you don’t use our link!

You can watch a preview of Jessica Hische’s class below!

Ultimate List of all the Best Art + Photo Tumblrs to Follow

ultimatearttumblrlist-4

*Update December 30th 2015 – I am still updating this list, removing Tumblrs that are no longer updated very frequently, and adding more as they are submitted. Please read the text below before submitting your Tumblr for consideration! Thank you all for the help, this has become an amazing resource – let’s keep it going!

I am compiling an extensive list of all the art and photography Tumblrs worth following. I would love your help to make this the ultimate list! Please leave a comment below with your suggestions and I will update this list with the best suggestions.

This list will focus as much as possible on Tumblrs that survey new work by different people and credit the creators of the images. Please do not submit Tumblrs that only focus on one person’s work (ie. your own personal portfolio) or mood boards that do not make any effort to link back to the source of the work.

Please share this with friends, the more input we have the better this resource will be! Stoked for this! Let’s go!

#IAMTALKS: Jeff Hamada

CIM-6jLW8AAUr3r

Earlier this year I was invited out to a festival called IAM in Barcelona, and I spoke about my motivations for running this website. They recently uploaded my entire talk to Vimeo. This message in the image above is what I wanted to leave people with. For me, life is not about eliminating fear it’s about using it! I’m pretty much at a point now where I have no real desire to do anything if I’m not at least a little bit afraid to do it.

If you’ve followed Booooooom for a couple years everything in this video may be old news but if you’re new here and have no idea what Booooooom is or who I am (see how I brought it back to IAM) then feel free to watch the video of my talk below.

Video of the Day: Luke Ramsey Continuously Drawing Characters

luke-ramsey-doodles600

A couple weeks ago we launched our Booooooom Doodle Hunt – our big online scavenger hunt – with bags from Herschel Supply and original drawings by Luke Ramsey up for grabs! The hunt ends this Friday so there’s still time to join in on the fun! Heads up for everyone already hunting, the last hidden drawing will be in one of the posts on Tuesday or Wednesday!

Click here for the full Booooooom Doodle Hunt instructions.

Subscribe to our Booooooom Youtube Channel

We shot the video above with Luke as he continuously drew characters for about 40 minutes. He challenged himself not to pause and think in the middle of any drawings, and tried to just let his mind go. Our original thought was to interview him but this ended up being something a lot more personal.

We are also selling 12 of Luke Ramsey’s original drawings in our shop! These are not prints, these are the original drawings! This may be one of the most affordable ways to own an original by Luke, and of course once they’re gone, they’re gone. Many years ago a dinosaur drawing he made was one of the first original pieces of art I bought.

Click here for Luke Ramsey’s drawings in The Booooooom Shop.

Huge thank you to Luke Ramsey for being a part of this little experiment! It’s been so much fun, and the response has been so positive, we’ll definitely have to do this again with another artist! Thanks once again to Herschel Supply for supplying the prizes! Good luck to everyone hunting doodles!

Booooooom Reader Submissions: November

november-600

Here is this month’s submission post! Thanks to everyone who submitted work to the October Reader Submissions post I’m still going through all the great stuff in there.

For those of you who are new around here, this is the best way to submit your work to be considered for a post on Booooooom. Please do not send in your work via email, my inbox can’t handle the hundreds of submissions each month.

Thanks again to everyone for up-voting work you like and leaving the positive comments to each other, it really pumps people up, and helps me see what work you like. I encourage you to share your work here because these posts get a lot of traffic and even if your work is not a fit for Booooooom it still gets seen, and definitely sends traffic to your own websites.

Please share your work here this month. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

Booooooom Reader Submissions: October

october-submissions600a

Here is this month’s submission post! Thanks to everyone who submitted work to the September Submissions post. As always, I get pumped up when I see everyone leaving positive comments on each other’s work! Great job everybody.

In case you’re new here, this is the best way to submit your work to be considered for a post on Booooooom. Up-vote work you like as it really encourages artists in this community and helps me see what kind of work the readers like. I encourage you to share your work here because these posts get a lot of traffic and even if your work is not a fit for Booooooom it still gets seen, and definitely sends traffic (and hopefully new fans) to your own websites.

The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website. Don’t post an image larger than 1mb, sometimes our system rejects it altogether so if you want to make sure your submission goes through submit a web resolution image!

Download While You Can: All The Booooooom Mixes

agnes-boom

At some point during the summer Soundcloud decided to remove most of my mixes from their site (I’ve since removed the rest). It’s a bummer because I wasn’t trying to make any money off of the music, I was just doing it for the fun of sharing something with you guys!

A few people noticed the mixes disappeared and tweeted about getting the mp3s so I’ve made a zip of pretty much all the mixes that you can download here.

Just a heads up, the last two are more rappy and have a lot of bad language.

I mix the music using Ableton which is pretty much cheating but it’s really fun. I might make a new one and share it through a service like Mixcloud. In the meantime grab those mixes; I don’t know how long I’ll keep them up, and probably won’t share them ever again.
