Booooooom x Herschel Supply: “Drawing On The Past” Opening Night

drawingonthepast00

Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening of our “Drawing On The Past” show with Herschel Supply at Burrard Arts Foundation on Thursday. The gallery filled up before the sun went down and stayed that way all night. It was an amazing night, and the perfect way to end this collaborative project.

A reminder for those in Vancouver, today is the last day to see the show! This week I’ll be uploading every single digital submission into a gallery on Booooooom, so stay tuned for that.

Thanks to my friend Brandon Shigeta for shooting photos at the event! Lots more images below!

Booooooom x Herschel Supply: “Drawing On The Past” Art Show Opens Today

drawingonthepast-01 drawingonthepast-02

Vancouver! Our “Drawing On The Past” art show with Herschel Supply opens today at Burrard Arts Foundation (108 East Broadway). The gallery is open to the public everyday (noon – 5pm) until October 6th. Feel free to drop in and see all the amazing work before our big opening party on Thursday night.

If you plan to attend the opening on Thursday please RSVP the Eventbrite HERE. We may get really busy and there may be a line at some point during the night. If you’re on the list you’ll have an easier time getting in. We’re really trying to abide by the fire codes, the last show was over capacity. Beverages will be provided by Vancouver Urban Winery and Postmark Brewing.

My advice is show up early, have a couple drinks, and enjoy the show before the space gets too packed. Hope you can come check out the work, it’s an incredible show.

Booooooom Submissions / October

october-submissions600a

Here is this month’s submission post! Thanks to everyone who submitted work to the September Submissions post, a lot of the work I featured this past month was pulled directly from that post. Happy to see everyone continuing to leave positive comments on each other’s work!

This is the best way to submit your work to be considered for a post on Booooooom. Thanks again to everyone for up-voting work you like, it really encourages artists in this community and helps me see what work you like. I encourage you to share your work here because these posts get a lot of traffic and even if your work is not a fit for Booooooom it still gets seen, and definitely sends traffic to your own websites.

Please share your work here this month. The comments allow images to be attached so make sure post an image along with a link to your website.

Submission guidelines:

1. Please don’t flood the comments with a dozen images, just post 1 image that represents your best work along with 1 link.

2. If you see good work posted by someone upvote it so it appears at the top. This is not just a nice thing to do, it helps me see what work you actually like.

3. You can/should also encourage people who are sharing good work here! Comment on their posts and let them know you like what they’re doing. I really want to foster a community here, and this is a simple way you can connect with other people making work.

4. Keep in mind your post may not show up right away because it has an image attached. It may need to be manually approved first so don’t freak out and post a million times, once is enough.

Craftsy: Figure Drawing Class

craftsy-figuredrawing

This week our sponsor is once again Craftsy which provides resources for creatives in the form of videos and tutorials. It’s been nice to find a sponsor that’s a good fit for what I’m trying to do with Booooooom; making art accessible.

Craftsy is offering a Free Figure Drawing class that teaches you the basics; things like blocking in, contour lines, and methods for describing light and shadow. If you skipped art school altogether this is worth checking out if you want to pick up some fundamentals. The best part being it costs nothing.

If you want, sign up for the free Figure Drawing class.

Booooooom x Herschel Supply: “Drawing On The Past” Gallery Show

drawingonthepast-booooooom2

I’m excited to finally announce our “Drawing On The Past” project with Herschel Supply will end in style next Thursday, October 2nd, with a gallery show at Burrard Arts Foundation (108 East Broadway). We will be packing in as many of the incredible submissions as we can fit. The show will run until October 5th. Beverages will be provided by Vancouver Urban Winery and Postmark Brewing.

If you plan to attend please RSVP the Eventbrite HERE. We may get really busy so there may be a line at some point during the night. If you’re on the list you’ll have an easier time getting in.

I also want to officially announce the winners of the very special Booooooom x Herschel Supply bags. Congratulations to the three on the flyer above: Lucy Drury, Maria Nguyen, and Mallory Lucille Rose. I know I said there’d be three winners but I actually picked a fourth winner, Rachel Hines. Her submission below is maybe my favourite of the entire project. There were many beautifully rendered portraits of people, places, and things but I was struck by the small moment that Rachel described. This is what a drawing made of honest lines looks like:

Thank you to everyone who submitted a drawing and shared a story. It’s going to be a really amazing show, we’re displaying all the drawings on custom made clipboards. I hope to see lots of you there! Following the show I will post an online gallery of all the digital submissions we received so stay tuned for that as well.

Once again, if you wanna come to the gallery show next Thursday, 6PM, October 2nd, please RSVP the Eventbrite HERE.

Imprint Presents: Jeff Hamada (Full Video)

jeffhamada-imprint-culturelab

In July, I flew down to Los Angeles to speak as part of Imprint Culture Lab’s on-going lecture series. One of the last speakers they had was David Choe so I had a fairly tough act to follow (he began his talk by smashing a chair on stage). Two years ago I set a goal for myself to say yes to public speaking events until I actually enjoyed doing them, and I’m excited to announce I may not ever speak publicly again; I actually enjoyed this one.

I don’t want to give away my whole talk, I’d rather you just watch it, but there’s a healthy amount of embarrassing stories, and things I’ve observed about the Internet. Specifically the way in which it’s killing creativity without most people noticing it.

Watch the full hour-long video below (if you have nothing better to do), and if you have any thoughts/insights about anything I touch on I’m totally into having a discussion in the comments section!

Hope you enjoy it.

#brilliantworks: Mist and Mirrors at Squamish Festival

vitaminwater-mist06

Not too long ago I was approached by Vitaminwater to create an installation at this year’s Squamish Festival. I enlisted the help of my friend, designer Alex Beim, and the team at Tangible Interaction to create a sculpture that would not only cool people off but also bring a little sense of wonder to the event. Wonder is a common theme throughout Tangible’s work, and creating extraordinary moments is sorta their specialty.

All credit goes to entire gang at Tangible Interaction; the idea, the design, the construction, they did everything. Watch the video below to see how it all went down!

Booooooom x The Juice Truck: Summer Ender Party

Tonight is our Summer Ender party with The Juice Truck! We are releasing a cold pressed juice together called “Brain On” that actually helps your brain function, and will be available at The Juice Truck all month. Come try it tonight, and put your brain to the test. There will be mind puzzles, music, beers, and lots of good prizes (including some of the last remaining Booooooom x Herschel bags I saved to be given away).

Booooooom x The Juice Truck Summer Ender Party

When: TONIGHT – 7pm till late

Where: The Juice Truck Cafe – 28 West 5th Ave

In honour of our brain juice I am re-posting this puzzle from Wired that I shared way back in 2009. It is still one of my favourite puzzles. If you don’t live in Vancouver and you can’t come to our party tonight maybe you can whip up your own brain juice at home and tackle this puzzle.

You are welcome to voice your frustration in the comments but if you know the answer please don’t ruin the fun for everyone else! Apparently this puzzle took me roughly an hour to solve in 2009. Good luck!
