Video of the Day: Jackie Chan and the Art of Editing an Action Comedy Film

jackiechan-actioncomedy

Filmmaker Tony Zhou returns with another brilliant video for “Every Frame A Painting”, his on-going series of video essays on all things film. In this episode Tony breaks down the genius of Jackie Chan and the art of making a good action comedy. Chan has terrific insights into the proper way to cut together action, and the video illustrates how many of today’s editors and directors are ruining films with their editing and framing choices.

This video is for anyone who has tried to watch a Transformers film and had no idea what happened during any of the action sequences. If you’re a filmmaker, of any kind, this is required viewing. Watch the video below.

Best of Kickstarter: Kung Fury

kungfury-film

David Sandberg’s over the top 1980’s action cop movie “Kung Fury” went up on Kickstarter a couple days ago and has already raised over $280,000. The film is about a cop who goes back in time to kill the most dangerous kung fu master, Adolf Hitler (naturally).

David and his friends live in Sweden and have shot most of their film, set in 1980’s Miami, in their tiny studio. They’ve gone to comical lengths to stretch their minuscule budget, for example they could only afford one police uniform so they had to shoot every extra separately.

Watch the amazing trailer below, the time travel sequence is what sold me on this movie.

The Funniest Kyle Mooney Youtube Videos: This guy will save SNL

Kyle Mooney: The guy who will save SNL

Every year people complain about Saturday Night Live. They say things like, it was waay funnier before! This sucks! All the funniest people have left! I’m gonna go work out!

I’m actually excited about SNL this year because they’ve added a guy named Kyle Mooney. His debut last weekend was hilarious and afterwards I went on Youtube to look for more of his work. I realised later that my friend Levi had shown me some of his videos last year.

This is a little outside the realm of what I normally post but this guy is breaking new ground creatively. GQ recently wrote about him, posting their favourite Youtube clips, but they totally missed his funniest work! So here’s my list:

“The Funniest Kyle Mooney Youtube Videos”

“Voices”

One of Kyle’s characters is a comedian named Bruce Chandling, this is the character that he got to debut on SNL last weekend. In this clip Bruce does some incredible voiceover work. In my opinion, this is one of the funniest videos on the Internet.
