Free Learning of the Day: Skillshare Classes

This is for all you aspiring graphic designers out there! We’ve teamed up with Skillshare to offer you 1 month of unlimited access to all their creative classes, for $0. Free. You can sign up here for a premium account: Booooooom + Skillshare 30-day extended trial.

A couple weeks ago I started trying out different classes so I’d know first hand if any of them were worth sharing with you. After poking around a bit, I can honestly say there really is some great content on the site.

I recommend the logo design class, taught by the talented Aaron Draplin. It’s pretty fast paced (I had to pause it a couple times), and not every keyboard shortcut is explained, but I definitely learned more from watching this series of videos than I did in most of my media classes at University.

There are hundreds of classes and many talented instructors. Jeff Staple teaches a class on branding (I haven’t taken this class yet), and Jessica Hische, who famously designed the Moonrise Kingdom type, teaches another one about lettering. I’m halfway through her class, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

If you never went to design school or you just want to brush up on some basics this could be what you’re looking for. Full disclosure: Skillshare did not pay us to make this post, but if you sign up through this link it will support our site! Or don’t, it’s up to you. I still recommend their site even if you don’t use our link to check it out!

Free Learning of the Day: Watch Aaron Draplin Design A Logo in 15 Minutes

Here’s a good one for all you graphic designers out there. Watch everyone’s favourite logo designer, Aaron Draplin, design a logo in 15 minutes. This is the sort of content that I was dying for around the time I was in school. Actually, watching this is exactly how I felt when I first started as a co-op in the concept art department at Electronic Arts. All these seasoned illustrators and designers were making stuff all around me, and I was just sitting there, watching every thing they did, soaking it all up.

Thank you, Field Notes!

Yesssssss! Another nice package showed up at my door, this time goodies from Field Notes (a DDC/Coudal product). Now let me start off by saying, I am a fairly early adapter in terms of new technologies and gadgets. I twitter from my Blackberry, and I’ve even updated my Facebook status using my Wii (just once, because I could). But there is no better feeling than jotting down ideas in a good old notebook with your favourite pen or pencil. I love it. Field Notes sent me over a stack of little notebooks. Beautifully simple packaging. Blank, lined, graph paper, several styles. Pencils, rubber bands, even a calendar. Thanks you guys, they will be put to good use!
