Red Bull Music Academy: The Junction

junction

Check out the official trailer for The Junction — a series of six animated shorts we produced for the upcoming Red Bull Music Academy in Montréal (September 24 to October 28)!

The first instalment premieres September 22 and features Grammy-winning piano maestro Chilly Gonzales and rock provocateur Peaches as they meet up for a basement jam session. The following shorts feature conversations between Haitian-born, Montréal-bred beatsmith Kaytranada and 2016 Red Bull Music Academy participant River Tiber, Jessy Lanza and Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan, Lunice, Ango and 247esp, A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, and Toronto four-piece BadBadNotGood with Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring.

We tapped six of our favourite Canadian animators to come up with unique visualizations for each segment. That incredible lineup includes: Academy Award-nominee Patrick Doyon, Malcolm Sutherland, Dylan Glynn, Hamish LambertKyle Mowat, and Brandon Blommaert (in collaboration with illustrator Josh Holinaty).

Massive shout out to Luigi Allemano who created the sound design and original music for the entire series. Luigi is an animator himself, who’s worked on more than 50 NFB films, including Doyon’s Oscar-nominated film Dimanche. It was an honour to work with all of these talented people!

Thanks to our friends at the NFB for supporting this project, and everyone at Red Bull who worked on this. We couldn’t be more proud or excited to be part of Red Bull Music Academy’s first substantive foray into the world of animation! Watch the trailer below and stay tuned for the full episodes!

27 Waldos

Not too long ago Islands Fold proposed the idea of a collection of artists each creating their own unique version of Waldo (or Wally depending on your location). The artists would also imagine an environment for him to hide in. Somehow this amazing idea was rejected by the company who owns the rights. What a colossal mistake!

Can you tell who drew each of these? See a full artist list below!

JOSH HOLINATY INTERVIEW

Josh Holinaty artist interview

I think I could live in Edmonton if summer lasted from January until December, how do you like living there?

It’s great, really. Aside from the long winter, out summer is incredibly beautiful. The river valley, the music fests, etc. Also, there is an incredible arts scene here that is hyper embracing. Everyone – from art, music, burlesque, film – just hangs out all the time. Everyone is always in a state of collaboration in a very DIY sense. There’s a stigma that Edmonton has ‘no scene’ because it doesn’t have a full on art college or something like that. But in the end it only drives people really hard to want to do their own thing – and the results are obvious. Zines. Garage rock. Public Art. In the past few years there’s been a serious blossoming in this town.

Booooooom x Poketo

It’s been hard to keep this a secret, but it is a secret no more! I have joined forces with my friends at Poketo to release a collection of wallets designed by four Canadian artists!

Booooooom x Poketo collaboration Afterlife Wallet Series

Several months ago I asked Andrea Wan, Winnie Truong, Josh Holinaty, and Howie Tsui to each create images based on their interpretation of the “After Life”. What happens to us after we die?

Over the next couple weeks I will be posting an interview with each artist to give you some more insight into their work and will end each interview by giving away one of our wallets!

If you’d like to purchase a wallet (or four) jump over here.

Take a closer look at the wallets below!
