This week (June 22nd-27th) the arts festival known as Pow! Wow! invades Long Beach, California, and is well on its way to becoming the largest mural arts festival in the world. In the last year the festival traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, hosted their largest event yet in Honolulu, Hawaii, and expanded to Austin, Texas (in partnership with SXSW).
Pow! Wow! Long Beach 2015 roster: Aaron De La, Benjie Escobar, Bumblebee, Cruz, Cryptik, Fafi, Hueman, James Jean, Jeff McMillan, Jeff Soto, Low Bros, Madsteez, Nychos, Push, and Tristan Eaton.
On June 26th Long Beach Museum of Art and Thinkspace Gallery are also hosting “Vitality and Verve” and have invited 20 international artists including Aaron Horkey, Andrew Schoultz, Audrey Kawasaki, Brendan Monroe, Esao Andrews, Greg Simkins, Hot Tea, Meggs, Nosego and many others to transform both floors of their building with murals and installations.
You can watch the video from Pow! Wow! SXSW below.
My friends Jasper and Amy have started a fun little clothing brand, aimed at kids ages 2-10, called Big Bad Wolf. Designs will be released each month from an impressive list of artists including: James Jean, Nychos, Dabs Myla, Tristan Eaton, Andrea Wan, Evah Fan, Madsteez, and many others. The shirt above was designed by artist Yoskay Yamamoto.
Something tells me they’re gonna do alright! You can follow the project on Instagram @bigbadwolfkids.
My good friend Mark Paul Deren aka Madsteez is one of my absolute favourite people to hang with, and one of the most talented artists I know. He’s painted murals all over the world, and done so with one regular eye and one crazy eye. By crazy eye I mean he can’t see anything out of it other than random colour gradients; a rare condition he was born with.
Mark is teaming up with a filmmaker named Jamie Heinrich to make a short film, and they’re using Kickstarter to fund the project in a pretty unique way. Mark will be painting a mural made of up to 1,000 20″ x 20″ sections and donors to the project will each get one of the painted sections.
Watch the video below to get a better idea of the film they’re making!
Pow! Wow! Taiwan has officially begun! I’ve been out in Taipei for a week now, and it has quickly become one of my favourite cities (the food miiight have something to do with it). Here’s a quick re-cap of the first couple days. If you want to follow along on Instagram I’m posting to @Booooooom and you can follow @PowWowTaiwan as well.
We started with a tour of all the potential walls in the city (photo above: Madsteez and Brendan Monroe), which was followed by the official opening of the event. Yesterday we had a little rain delay, so most of the artists are getting started today. James Jean, Kristen Farr, and Mr.Ogay were among the artists able to put some work in, and you can see images of their progress at the bottom of this post.
Lots of images below, have a look!
Here’s a little edit of some of this year’s Pow! Wow! Hawaii murals, shot high above the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu, from a little drone helicopter.
Artists in order of appearance: Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, Ron English, Ekundayo, Meggs and Bask, Nychos and Buff Monster, Madsteez, and Andrew Schoultz. This is only a tiny glimpse, more to come!
Enjoy the video below!
Last month marked the debut of Forest For The Trees, a mural project in Portland, Oregon. The event was sort of a sister event to Pow! Wow!, and featured a whole lotta my friends: Erik Otto, Meggs, Rone, Madsteez, Sam Rodriguez, Kamea Hadar, and Yoskay Yamamoto among others.
You can watch a video re-cap of the event below, as well as a time-lapse of Rone painting the wall you see here.
