Flying Lotus / Essential Mix

I finally got around to listening to the Flying Lotus Essential Mix and it lives up to all the hype! This is experimental hip hop done right – a fantastic two-hour adventure. Flying Lotus hails from California and is signed to Warp (if you are familiar with Warp you will know what you’re in for). The mix fittingly starts off with Galaxy in Turiya by Alice Coltrane, wife of John Coltrane and Flying Lotus’ great aunt!

The Hood Internet > Girltalk

Last summer it was Girltalk, this summer it’s all about The Hood Internet. I actually paid for the second Girltalk album (what was I smoking?) and nearly had a brain hemorrhage when he started cutting up Avril Lavigne. What happened to mixes that actually maintained a flow and actually let a track breathe for a bit? I guess everyone and their helper monkeys are mash-up djs now but The Hood Internet are legit – I mean they got a mixtape with all mashes of Lykke Li songs! I have linked a few of their mixtapes (Grab the Chicago one, thank me later.) And yes, they let the blends last for longer than 3.14 seconds.

DeadMau5 Essential Mix.

Not too long ago I featured a bunch of tracks from Toronto-based MSTRKRFT. Well it’s that time again, not for more MSTRKRFT but for more from Toronto. DEADMAU5! This is his 2-hour Essential mix! Pete Tong’s voice on the intros to these essential mixes always gets me pumped up. Throw this on while you work and you’ll be at home before you know it or throw this on over the weekend and you’ll be back to work before you know it. This is the type of music that makes me speed on the highway.
