Artist Spotlight: Cleon Peterson

cleon-peterson02

The violent, mesmerizing, and brutally honest work of artist Cleon Peterson. In some paintings demon-like characters are attacking people, in other paintings similar actions are being carried out by uniformed figures. What is perhaps most disturbing is the realisation that we are drawn to such darkness; titillating news headlines, and bloody movies. The violence is inside of us all. More images below.

Giant Oil Paintings of Instagram-Famous Pigeon by Belgian Artist Adele Renault

Renault6Renault7

Belgian painter Adele Renault’s large-scale portraits are impressive enough on their own. However, the story behind the subject of her latest series (currently on view at Havas Annex in Chicago) is worth noting. Artist George Keaton and photographer Mariah Naella found an egg on their kitchen counter after workers accidentally destroyed a pigeon nest while fixing their windows. The egg started hatching and before they knew it the couple was raising a little bird. Even after being released back into the wild, the pigeon remained a fixture in the couple’s neighbourhood, and his development featured prominently on Instagram where Renault has since drawn inspiration.

I like that these verge on photorealism but still have a unique style to them. Check out more images below!
