“Still (Noon)” by Photographer Shane Lavalette

A lovely series by New York-based photographer Shane Lavalette (previously featured here). Based on one of Swiss photographer Theo Frey’s (1908–1997) signature series, Lavalette retraced Frey’s steps, traveling to the same 12 villages Frey photographed in the 1930s.

See more images from “Still (Noon)” below or on display as part of the exhibition “Unfamiliar Familiarities: Outside Views on Switzerland” at the Musee de l’Elysee October 25, 2017 to January 7, 2018. All images courtesy of Shane Lavalette and Fotostiftung Schweiz. Theo Frey contact sheets from the archive of Fotostiftung Schweiz (Winterthur, Switzerland).

American photographer Shane Lavalette’s new book is an extension of a series he did for a 2012 exhibition called “Picturing the South.” Drawing on the rich history of blues and gospel music, the book also includes text by artist and poet Tim Davis.
