Artist Ugo Rondinone Builds Giant Florescent Rock Installation in the Nevada Desert

“Seven Magic Mountains” is a massive installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. Located in the desert of Nevada (just South of Las Vegas), the stacks of brightly coloured boulders stand over 30 feet high and took five years to complete due in large part to the administrative hurdles required for such a large-scale project.

Thanks to the support of the Nevada Museum of Art and the Art Production Fund, the piece is now open to the public. However, you only have about two years to check this thing out before it’s taken down in 2018. See more images below!

Bicycle Casts Elephant Shadow

Another bike-based projection project, this time by Swiss coder and graphic designer, Michael Flückiger. Made using “a speedometer, a projector, a car battery, an iPad mini and OpenFrameworks,” Flückiger’s bicycle casts a projection made to look like the shadow of an elephant walking and/or galloping (depending on how fast he peddles).

Wait… Do elephants gallop? Is “stampeding” inaccurate if there’s only one?

Watch the video and feel free to weigh in on the whole “galloping” thing in the comments below!

New Design for the Vancouver Art Gallery by Herzog & de Meuron

The design for the new Vancouver Art Gallery has been unveiled! Designed by acclaimed Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the proposed gallery will be 230 feet tall and have a total floor area of 310,000 square feet (85,000 of which will be dedicated exhibition space). There will be a library and 350-seat theatre, and it will all be primarily made of wood! While the design is impressive, the project is expected to cost $350 million. That’s not only $50 million more than expected but far from the $73 million raised so far.

I personally love the building design; the scale, the striking silhouette, and the carefully considered windows in the upper levels rather than yet another all glass addition to the boring Vancouver skyline. I just don’t know how our city is going to afford it (I hope we can). If it is indeed built, it will be Herzog & de Meuron’s first building in Canada. More renderings of the proposed design below!
