My recent work has been focused on the “American dream” juxtaposed with the adversities that 2020 has presented. Being a Canadian living in New York, there’s an idea of giving up your home, friends and family to pursue this fantasy of a more successful life. It’s difficult to pinpoint what that success means but never the less there’s a pressure to chase it. This year, with the pandemic, police brutality and civil unrest, it feels like this facade has been increasingly exposed at an accelerated rate. All the while, the news keeps propping up disaster and corporations advertise unattainable material happiness. These factors have left me contemplating the distractions, the facades, and the hapless pursuit of them.
