There’s a distinctly dark tone that is consistent throughout the illustrations and paintings of Altadena-based illustrator Jay Torres. The common themes of dark figures in barren landscapes, nightmarishly-goofy portraits, and catholic iconographies all create a quiet and aloof dreaminess. It’s no wonder that as a child, Jay Torres was chastised by the nuns at his school for his tastes in the fringe subcultures of the 80s and 90s such as horror films, punk rock, skateboarding, and graffiti. As he grew older these interests not only informed his perspective but also shape a uniquely hypnagogic and surreal aesthetic. Although mostly self-taught for most of his life, Jay earned his BFA in illustration from ArtCenter College of Design in 2018.
