Fear/Loving

Fear/Loving examines barriers to expression and intimacy that I have experienced and witnessed while coming of age in an almost exclusively heterosexual, cisgender, and conservative Christian environment.

This on-going body of work follows myself and many of my peers through the recognition of sexuality, gender, and what it means to “come out” in the midwestern landscape. It also links two simultaneous and transformative experiences that occurred in my early twenties; a divorce between my parents and the realization of my own homosexuality.

In parts of the U.S. that have not experienced the cultural awakenings more common in metropolitan areas, this imagery is an impetus to address the urgency for open dialogues about gender identity, sexual fluidity, and de-stigmatizing homosexuality as a phase.
