Most Saturdays before sunset in Santa Monica, a table stacked with headphones is set up on the beach. A dance project called The Wave synchronizes them and anyone can borrow a pair. Electronic dance music pulsates in participants’ ears along with regular narrative interludes from the project’s founder. Her messaging is one of mindful manifestation. Its push for greater self-actualization is both the opposite of and not unlike an evangelical pastor urging congregants to sublimate themselves to a higher power. As dancers move through the meditation--often into the water--the gathering shows that many people now seek within themselves a relationship that was once shared between an individual and their god.
