Riitta Ikonen / It’s Nice That

I love Riitta Ikonen (her work is good too!), and was delighted to find the first installment of the It’s Nice That Talk series featured her! Marry me Riitta!

File Magazine / Issue #1

File Magazine is without question the coolest publication to show up on my doorstep thus far. I love large-format mags and this bi-annual publication outta the UK is roughly 12″ x 15.5″. The cover is a thick card stock and the inside pages are actually newsprint, but don’t come across cheap like you’d think. The page layouts are beautifully minimal – this thing is a real work of art. This first issue comes with a limited print by Geoff McFetridge and a DVD with over two hours of shorts films, music videos and interviews. In short, this magazine is legit!

The New Order / Issue #1

The inaugural issue of The New Order magically arrived at my doorstep, and it is an impressive debut. It is a quarterly art and fashion publication from the folks behind Slamxhype, and the highlight for me is the A2 sized fold-out Conor Harrington poster (and interview)! It is only a matter of time before this guy is everywhere. Other interviews include: Herbert Baglione, José Parla, Geoff McFetridge, and Mark Gonzales.

Ian Cox just just emailed to say he was the one who took the photo that was used for this poster, here’s his Flickr.

Blank Canvas!

Students at Ravensbourne College of Design in London have come up with an ingenious way to raise funds for their grad show, a project called Blank Canvas! Packages containing objects purchased in thrift shops were sent out to many of the students’ favourite designers and illustrators to act as blank canvases. The objects were customized by the recipients and sent back, and now the students are having an auction of the work on April 30th at the Vibe Bar on Brick Lane.

Not that impressed? Let me just rattle off a few of the 50+ artists/designers involved: Milton Glaser! Hellovon! Non-Format! Parra! Job Wouters! Andy J Miller! Julien Vallee! Alex Ostrowski! Stina Persson!

Head over to the Blank Canvas page to get on the guestlist if you want to attend the auction!

Vis-Ed / Vol. 1

A new magazine appeared on my doorstep that I didn’t recognize, Vis-Ed. I was stunned as I flipped through it – there are no ads (aside from the inside front and back covers)!? Apparently Vis-Ed was the title of the artist section in XLR8R and now it appears it has become its own publication!

The best part is this pull-out poster designed by Damien Correll!

Plazm Magazine

The latest surprise package to land on my doorstep, Plazm Magazine. This thing is heaaaavy – I’m bicep curling it right now. It’s pretty new too, it’s only been around since 1991!!! Yeah, that kinda speaks for itself. The Portland-based magazine has had contributions from roughly a billion artists and musicians (proof)! Thanks Sarah, you’re awesome!

Wesley Burt

When I worked at Electronic Arts as a concept artist, I used to visit the forums on ConceptArt.org all the time. Wesley Burt had quite a following on there, for obvious reasons.

Extreme Sheep / LED Art

A great viral ad by Samsung. I am convinced parts of it are CGI (specifically the sheep walking and the Mona Lisa) but the idea and execution are great.
