The Anti-Sartorialist: Photographer Hans Eijkelboom

Hans-Eijkelboom06

Phaidon has released a fantastic book called “People of the Twenty-First Century”, which is a comprehensive collection of street photography by Hans Eijkelboom. (Good last name amirite?)

Hans Eijkelboom would hang around areas with lots of pedestrians, often near malls, and look for recurring elements. These could be things like men carrying purses, or couples walking arm in arm, band t-shirts, or gelled hair. He would shoot for anywhere from half an hour to several hours, using a camera hung around his neck and a trigger in his pocket. Later, in his Amsterdam studio he’d arrange the images into grids that he called ‘Photo Notes’.

The book represents two decades of these fascinating studies. It’s hard to look at these images and not chuckle at the idea of individualism. The work is definitely funny but also sort of profoundly sad. Take a look at lots more below!

Best of Kickstarter: “1050.6(c) against Showtime” Film by Scott Carthy

newyork-subway-panhandlers

Director Scott Carthy beautifully documents the divisive subculture of subway car performers in this 7-min short documentary. From what I can gather 1050.6(c) is the section of the New York Transit code that states panhandling and performing on trains is prohibited.

Scott is hoping to raise funds through Kickstarter to shoot a longer, more in depth, film about these dancers. Watch the 7-min short film below!

Satisfying Video of the Day: Street Typography

street-typography

Tom Williams, a designer in London, happened to catch a couple city workers painting text onto a road and the footage is so satisfying to watch. I have so many questions! This dude with the roller is a master, are all city road painters this skilled? I always assumed stencils were involved? If anyone out there has more insight into this I would love to hear from you.

Watch below.
