Photographer Spotlight: Karim El Maktafi

Born in Italy to Moroccan parents, photographer Karim El Maktafi is currently based in Milan. Working on long-term projects between Italy and Morocco, Maktafi’s practice explores concepts of identity and belonging through a lens of documentary photography and portraiture.

Since his graduation from the Italian Institute of Photography in 2013, Maktafi has been awarded multiple scholarships and a mentorship with the American photographer Maggie Steber. In recent years he has exhibited work throughout Italy, Germany and France. His project “Hayati”, completed in 2017, won the PH Museum 2017 New Generation Prize and Second Prize at the Kassel Dummy Award in 2018 .
