Artist Spotlight: Simone Elizabeth Saunders

Love these colourful textile pieces by artist Simone Elizabeth Saunders, a mixed-race woman of Jamaican and European descent living and working one province over from us, in Alberta, Treaty 7 Territory.

Saunders explains that these works “engage upon a search for belonging: studying the Black female body, personal identities and a connection to Black history”. Through this tactile and rigorous process of creating, she is exploring ideas of otherness and “the Black body’s relation rooted in a kinship of power and survival”. The connection to a global diaspora of a Black community is important for her, and the beautiful results are firmly rooted in a powerful history.
