Artist Spotlight: Grace Lynne Haynes

A selection of paintings by California-born, New Jersey-based artist Grace Lynne Haynes. Juxtaposing intricate moments, textures and patterns, against flat swaths of black paint representing female bodies, Haynes questions the very nature of colour and how historically symbolic meanings surrounding certain colours and shades (especially black) have been constructed. In Haynes’s work, black appears aspirational, dignified, and sublime — challenging stereotypes surrounding Black femininity.
