South African photographer Robin Bernstein photographs his surroundings in his “South African Portraits and Landscapes” series. Based in Cape Town, Bernstein has been photographing the people and places of South Africa for the past few years. What began as collection of individual images has gradually taken shape as a cohesive body of work with an evolving narrative.
“My work takes a particular interest in both current and historical urban spatial and socioeconomic issues centered around land and globalization within the context of South Africa,” Bernstein explains, “with a particular interest in how contemporary youth culture interfaces and manifests in these contexts. The environment—be it ‘natural’ or built—is viewed as the embodiment of a constant negotiation between those who inhabit the land and the land itself.”
