Artist Spotlight: Jingze Du

A selection of paintings by artist Jingze Du, who was born in China and then moved to Ireland at age 13. Some of the portraits here are from Du’s exhibition “In Between” in which he explored the idea of opposite extremes and specifically the extremes present in his own identity having grown up in two very different cultures. He described this as “the space in between the Chinese me and the Irish me”. Some of the more recent work includes some recognizable faces, even animals, but the images still feel like a continuation, exploring extremes, masculinity, femininity, subtlety and exaggeration—playfully balancing somewhere between the familiar and the strange.
