Portland, Oregon-based photographer Magnus Holmes explores the relationships between college students sharing common spaces in his series, “Roommates.” Initially sparked by an interest in the platonic bonds formed by random housing assignments, over time the project expanded to include those who live together by choice. Viewing his subjects through a sociological lens, Holmes explores the infinitely varied dynamics of shared housing.
“Roommates hopes to comprehend the forces that drive people to live together,” he explains. “Personally, I wanted to understand why certain pairs of roommates worked altruistically. Was it due to their personalities? Did the environmental aspects of living spaces have an effect on relationship tension? These questions I tried to answer visually.”
