Inspired by the 1975 novel by Georges Perec, “An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris,” Antwerp, Belgium-based photographer Eva Donckers’ recent series draws its title from a line in the book — ”What happens when nothing happens, other than the weather, people, cars and clouds.” Her deliberate, quiet presence allows for the ordinary and accidental to happen, and she describes her work as “a radical poetry of everyday existence.” Encounters with unfamiliar people and places are at the heart of her creative practice, as she strives to capture the idiosyncratic traces of human interactions in the places she visits. She likens her creative perception to poet Fernando Pessoa — “At times, on days of perfect and exact light, when things have all the reality they can.”
