Artist Spotlight: Roxy Peroxyde

A selection of recent work by Montreal-based artist Roxy Peroxyde. A self-taught painter, Peroxyde found her way to the medium after the birth of her daughter 14 years ago, and has been painting full time for the past five years. Her current practice focuses on recreating works by old masters—playing with new meanings and symbols from both modern and ancient times:

“I believe there is a lot to be learned from people and society through art and that it is a mistake to think we are inherently different in nature from our ancestors,” she says. “I try to build a bridge between a not-so-long-ago past and our present, mostly to make fun of how seriously we take ourselves. Sometimes I think I could make things easier for myself and maybe just have an instagram meme page, but that probably wouldn’t stand the test of time, so I paint.”
