Illustrator Spotlight: Oyow

A selection of images by Seoul-based illustrator Oyow. Working with a variety of clients from around the world, Oyow mainly uses photoshop or stencil printing techniques to create his artwork. He is interested in many motifs, especially the theme of relationships. Sometimes sad, sometimes happy, sometimes light, sometimes complicated, Oyow translates the complexity of relationships into fragmentary but meaningful scenery. He also makes a small book every year.

The motifs of the books differ from one book to the next, with topics ranging from relationships to youth and love, as he draws inspiration from old memories and the by-products of everyday life. In the series, “The Gardeners,” for example, plants and people act as a metaphor for specific types of relationships. In “Blue Owls” he portrays nocturnal animals whose energy continues to burn like fire through the night, reminiscent of young boys and girls grappling with the excitement and anticipation of adolescence and the unknown.
