Photographer Spotlight: Sophie Forster

A photo essay about dementia and what it feels like to lose your memories by designer and photographer Sophie Forster. Born in a rural village in Austria, Forster carries a deep appreciation for crafting by hand, with activities like paper-making and sewing informing the tactile and narrative quality of her images. When it comes to her photography, Forster isn’t interested in capturing perfection but, rather, the overlooked and everyday moments that hold unexpected beauty. This collection of images offers a visual exploration of a topic we might usually prefer not to think about: dementia. Through the narrative series, Forster challenges us to think about what it would mean to lose our memories while we still have them:

“This project is a invitation to pause. To reflect on what we take for granted – our memory. Through intimate conversations, countless documentaries, and interviews with those affected, I’ve built a visual story that captures both the heartbreak and the quiet beauty of this experience. A poetic look at what it means to slowly forget.”
