A series documenting people seeking alternative ways of living by Hungarian-Nicaraguan photographer Erika Nina Suárez. Currently based in Budapest, Suárez received her BFA from the University of North Texas in 2019 and MA at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in 2026. Her work explores alternative lifestyle movements and relationships to land through long-term documentary fieldwork and portraiture—an interest that stems from growing up around farms in Hungary and Nicaragua as well as spending time photographing friends living in a clothing-optional co-op in the United States.
“Will There Be Fire? Will There Be Bread?” examines the growing movement of people leaving urban environments in favour of farming, self- sufficiency, and communal life. While the project started with a single individual, it revealed a broader pattern. Suárez has since expanded it into an ongoing series, following young people and families in Hungary who have left cities in recent years to build lives on farms:
“Again and again, I encountered people making similar decisions and expressing similar frustrations. Many described feeling overstimulated, burnt out, unable to afford housing in the city, and uncertain about what kind of future was available to them. Others spoke about wanting to grow their own food, to have greater control over their time, and to rethink what community can look like. Together, the photographs document people actively building alternative ways of living while navigating the realities and uncertainties that come with them.”
