*Among Others* is a photographic project made in Japan that explores the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit.
I became interested in a particular sense of silence: not simply an absence of sound, but something shaped by order, restraint, routine and an awareness of others. I was drawn to the tension between belonging to a collective and remaining separate within it.
Moving between presence and absence, proximity and distance, the photographs explore how we can be constantly among others while still experiencing solitude. Rather than documenting Japan, the project uses the country as a context to reflect on how we inhabit shared spaces and relate to one another.
The eight images presented here are selected from a larger body of approximately 70 photographs, currently being developed into a photobook.
