“Amour” by Charlie Spencer

Is football still a popular sport? With players being traded for millions of euros and seats for hundreds, artist Charlie Spencer explores the sport’s glorification.
His choice of teams is not without significance: the jerseys of OM and PSG evoke a lucrative rivalry. The opposition, prefabricated by Canal+ in the 1990s, quickly became widespread among fans. The propitious ground for opposition between Paris and the provinces, the North and the South, made it possible to turn this duel into a commercial event. This large-scale operation still echoes among the fans today.
Charlie Spencer mocks this simulated rivalry by bringing the two clubs together in an intimate grip. Their hands are interlaced, evoking artifice, but also comradeship, support. Because ultimately, what remains genuine in football is the Love of sport.
