This ongoing series of illustrations started out as a playful exploration of line using ink, a medium I had not previously experimented with, on recycled, handmade paper. My work frequently features birds and other creatures, against a backdrop of flora embedded in otherworldly landscapes. This series carried such imagery forward, while adding new themes and imagery: birds emerging from portals, purposeful and menacing; landscapes peering out from their alert eyes, sinuous forms inseparable from the landscape from which they emerge, vines travelling across blocks of colour.
To me, this series speaks of the aliveness of nature and its silent warnings, the animals that sense a disaster before it strikes, how time is marked and felt by them, and the invisible networks of plants beneath the ground we walk on.
