Camera Stories: Madeline Keyes-Levine

I got this camera on eBay for $20; it was untested and the seller didn't know if it worked, but I had a good feeling. It was my first point and shoot film camera and there’s so many moments I’ve captured that would be impossible on an SLR. I carry this camera everywhere and it's really changed my photography which used to be almost entirely staged. It's always been about world-building and synthesizing my life in equal measure, processing via creation. This camera allows that process to happen in front of me immediately all of the time.

It's small but still comforting to hold, the shutter makes the most satisfying sound, you can over or underexpose because there's no DX reader, and crucially there's a self-timer.

This photo is self-portrait taken at the beach using a stack of books as a tripod and it feels like fate.
