Colorful Roots

In 2011 I embarked on a journey guided solely by a potent desire to witness with my own eyes the lives of my ancestors. This desire took me to the Amazon rainforest and The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of Colombia. Shadowing the lives of the Arhuaco and Huitoto indigenous communities felt like I had traveled back in history. Their simple yet rich way of life deeply inspired and saddened me as I witnessed their every-day struggle to protect their land and culture against industrialization. Fast forward 9 years later, I feel the same anguish as people of color struggle to feel safe in a land they call their home. I realize that the struggles we face as a society are not political, they are human struggles. With this series I aim to celebrate and inspire self-reflection.
