Experimental Typography — Bad Design Is Smoke, Good Design Is a Mirror
Inspired by Juan Carlos Fernandez’s quote, “Bad design is smoke while good design is a mirror,” this project explores how typography can communicate meaning through material, light, and physical experimentation rather than digital manipulation.
The project investigates two contrasting visual expressions. Ink dispersing in water creates blurred, unpredictable forms that evoke smoke, while text printed on transparent paper is projected onto the floor using light in a dark room, producing a mirror-like effect. By experimenting with these analog techniques through a process of trial and error, typography becomes a visual experience that reflects the relationship between design, perception, and clarity.
The final composition brings these experiments together.
