Alison Bennett’s images of goldfish are silent pauses that beckon us to be still. Gently describing silent paths through dark water, they offer a moment of respite in a relentlessly over-stimulating world. Whilst goldfish are ubiquitous domesticated ornaments dismissed as forgetful; Bennett’s creatures are granted dignity and presence.

“This work arose from a period of solitude and introspection when I reflected on delicate ecosystems that sustain wider environments and internal worlds. During this time I set up aquariums to better understand the role of water in ecological processes. What surprised me was becoming attuned to the aquarium as an entity, a living ecosystem that pulses with life. I found myself observed by fish, like ancient entities emerging from the void.”
