Flora

Flora documents the careful control and romanticization of nature though the practice of gardening. Despite the exercise of power by the human hand, the plants seem to take on a life of their own. Drooping branches take the shape of a crestfallen figure. The camera flash captures an agave caught in the middle of something, a garden hose cast recklessly around its base. A red flowered bush peers back at the viewer through a peep hole. Roses grow riotously around a trestle. These images hint at a private life of plants and suggest that in spite of humans’ best efforts to control the natural world, it has its own wild spirit that persists.
