In Between

I took these photos during the free time I had between takes of a video I was shooting in the archipelago. This work allowed me to get to hang-out with a few locals. We usually started to talk about the connection they still have with Portugal.
In conversation with Aderito, he said that they don't feel Africans; they feel European. Later on, while talking with Michelle, another local, he said the same thing. That feeling stuck on my mind.
Cape Verde had no human presence before the Portuguese arrival. The islands became a huge slavery supermarket in the XV and XVI century. As a result, their genetics is a mix between the Europeans that went there to make a living, and the African slaves that were brought there to be sold.
They are forever In Between civilizations, In Between continents, In Between ages.
