Inspired by magical realism, my work explores the intersection between folklore, mythology, and identity, presented through detailed figurative surreal snapshots which are informed by personal and local narratives. I often use mythical figures such as “La Madre Monte” (Mountain Mother) and self-portraiture as a stand-in to examine environmental justice, migration and pressures placed on women, questioning societal ideals and the construction of identity.
Through my latest paintings, I am also exploring my heritage and immigration journey. The landscapes I’m creating have a strong foundation in reality inspired by Colombia but are constructed and modified on the canvas. Often times the body becomes the landscape itself.
