Submission Painting

Larry Li: Otis College of Art and Design MFA candidate, semester 1

These 8 works done in 2020 encapsulate my first semester of graduate school at Otis College of Art and Design. These figure paintings utilized collage and image transfer techniques to grapple with themes of family, history, religion and politics. I began the semester off with a series of paintings utilizing Chinese Calendars juxtaposed with family photographs and historical photographs, thinking about time in a specific cultural lens. With that cultural perspective of temporality I began warping history with other paintings that remixed old photographs of pre-revolutionary China along with image transfers of my own family archives and inserted religious themes that spoke to my own conflicts regarding history, politics, religion.
