Submission Painting

Maré Baixa

My painting explores Capoeira as a meeting point between movement, identity, ancestry and freedom. I have practised Capoeira Angola for over 26 years, training and teaching in Brazil, the UK and Colombia, and it has profoundly shaped the way I understand the body, community and cultural memory. My paintings translate the circular movement, energy and ritual of the roda into colour, gesture and layered forms, exploring the relationship between the human figure and nature. As an artist and educator, I have exhibited and presented my work in community, cultural and independent art spaces, while developing projects that connect painting, Capoeira and social participation. My practice reflects a life lived between cultures, continually exploring roots, displacement, transformation and belonging.
